History of The Swan Coach House

In 1965 a group of extraordinary women established the Forward Arts Foundation in Atlanta, Georgia. These distinguished arts patrons, whose dynamic leadership was matched by their determination, transformed the carriage house of the Swan House estate into a thriving tearoom, gift shop and art gallery.

Through the management and operation of the Swan Coach House, sale of the Swan's Palette Cookbook, the annual Fall Flea Market and other fund-raising events, the Forward Arts Foundation has realized significant funds in support of the visual arts and has created an indelible mark on Atlanta's art landscape.

The Forward Arts Foundation was initiated by 12 community minded volunteers, including the Honorable Anne Cox Chambers who became the Foundation's first chairman. The trustees began the original Coach House on the grounds of the High Museum, then located on Peachtree Street in the former High family home. Laughingly calling themselves the "Dirty Dozen," they transformed that building into a Tea Room and Gift Shop, donating proceeds to the Museum. When construction of a new museum necessitated the building's demolition, these resourceful ladies, now joined by two additional trustees, organized the Forward Arts Foundation and re-located to the existing facility on the grounds of the Atlanta History Center. Prior to relocating to its current location, the Foundation members had to remodel and enlarge the building that once served as the carriage house of the handsome Philip Schutze designed Swan House to create the charming Restaurant and Gift Shop. In 1985, Mr. and Mrs. O. Ray Moore built the Art Gallery, an integral part of the Swan Coach House. The Swan Coach House continues to be a labor of love for the Forward Arts Foundation members. They continue to strive to create a Southern, hospitable atmosphere and hope that you will come by for a visit.
